Angelina Jolie became a Hollywood icon when she took the lead role in ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ (2001). This success was followed by the movies ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith(2005), ‘Wanted’ (2008), and ‘Salt'(2010). Later on, she played the title character in the film ‘Maleficent’ (2014).
She was named by her father after the costume designer Angela Alexander. Her original name would have been Angeliki. Jon Voight, Jolie’s father, decided that should he and his wife have a daughter, they would name her Angelica. After his divorce with Marcheline Bertrand, he started calling their daughter Angelina instead. When she began her acting career, she dropped her surname Voight and began using her middle name Jolie for her stage name.
Jolie has also been noted for being involved in various humanitarian causes like her works in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has tattoos of each of the coordinates of each of her children’s birth countries.
