In Greek mythology, Damon and Pythias were friends in the 4th century; when Pythias was condemned to death by the ruler Dionysius, Damon offered to stand surety for him while Pythias bid farewell to his family. When Pythias duly returned, Dionysius was so impressed by their friendship that he pardoned both of them. The name was first used by English speakers in the mid-19th century, probably from the fame of the author Damon Runyon (1884-1946).
