This is not a traditional Cornish name. It was first used in the 20th century, popularized by the Poldark series of novels by the British novelist Winston Graham, which are set in historical Cornwall. The heroine in the novels is named Demelza (1946). The novels were later made into the BBC television series Poldark (1975), which further popularized the name. Demelza was supposedly taken from a place name of a Cornish town meaning 'hill-fort of Maeldaf'. The town is found in the civil parish of St Columb Major in Cornwall.
